Welcome to Shelby County Government's application process!

All employees hired after September 1, 1986, must be residents of Shelby County and shall continue to reside in the County as a condition of their employment.  The residency requirement shall not apply to certain public safety/civil service employees.  This means exemption of this policy is in effect for the following departments and positions: (1) Sheriff Deputy Patrol Officers and Deputy Jailers, employed by the Sheriff Department, (2) Correction Officers employed by the Division of Corrections, (3) Firefighters and Paramedics personnel employed by the Shelby County Fire Department. The residency exemption for public safety/civil service employees does not include appointed positions with the Sheriff’s Office, Division of Corrections or the Fire Department.

Job Status Definitions

Closed Promotional – For current Shelby County Permanent or Durational employees only; excludes Shelby County temporary employees and Shelby County employees on original job probation, extended probation, disciplinary probation, or suspension.

Grant-Funded - Funded by a grant for a duration of time as defined by the grant.

Open – Open to the public and Shelby County employees.

Open Register – A register of qualified applicants to be retained until a specified period of time to be considered for employment or until the list of eligible applicants is exhausted.

Position Summary

Under general supervision of the Manager of the Office of Sustainability and Resilience, assist in coordinating sustainability program areas for Memphis and Shelby County. Work closely with public agencies, local governments, citizens, non-profit organizations, advocacy groups, and communities to promote sustainable practices and initiatives.

 

Pay Grade: 51


Minimum Qualifications

100% -

1. Two (2) years of experience in sustainability, urban planning, environmental policy, or related field; and

2. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in urban planning, environmental studies, engineering, landscape architecture, or related field; OR

3. An equivalent combination of related education and/or experience.

4. LEED or related certification and/or Master's degree in sustainability, urban planning, engineering, environmental studies, landscape architecture, or closely related field preferred.

5. PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED.


Duties and Responsibilities

1. Prepares and coordinates the Office of Sustainability and Resilience program functions, including project assistance or management.

2. Coordinates with public agencies, local government, non-profit, and/or community partners on projects, research, or regular information requests.

3. Prepares public outreach and educational materials to communicate Office of Sustainability and Resilience initiatives or practices using varied forms of media (digital, print, radio, television).

4. Prepares research, analysis and reports for internal and external stakeholders on sustainability initiatives, practices, and regulations.

5. Prepares maps, charts, and other graphic and visual presentations.

6. Prepares applications for grant-funding, collects and prepares reports and other required information to comply with the grant regulations and guidelines.

7. Contributes subject-matter expertise to program conceptualization, development, and execution to support implementation of the Memphis Area Climate Action Plan, the Mid-South Regional Resilience Master Plan, the Sustainable Shelby plan and other related plans and studies produced by the Office of Sustainability and Resilience.

8. Performs other related duties as required or directed.

1. Knowledge of best practices in sustainability concepts and initiatives.

2. Ability to work with database, spreadsheet, and design software, (ArcGIS, MS Office, Adobe software).

3. Ability to design maps, charts, models, sketches and other graphic and visual presentations.

4. Ability to utilize critical thinking, persuasive writing, and strong public speaking skills.

5. Ability to collect and prepare required data for grant funding applications in compliance with grant regulations and guidelines.

6. Ability to prepare summaries, narrative statements, and to analyze pertinent technical facts reported in project studies.

7. Ability to coordinate internal and external communication processes of sustainability initiatives.

8. Knowledge of federal, state and local regulations and policy regarding planning, environment, and sustainability.

9. Ability to manage and measure government compliance with established sustainability standards.

10. Ability to collaborate and respectfully engage diverse populations.
