Job Status Definitions

Closed Promotional – For current Shelby County Permanent or Durational employees only; excludes Shelby County temporary employees and Shelby County employees on original job probation, extended probation, disciplinary probation, or suspension

Grant-Funded - Funded by a grant for a duration of time as defined by the grant.

Open – Open to the public and Shelby County employees.

Open Register – A register of qualified applicants to be retained until a specified period of time to be considered for appointment or until the list of eligible applicants is exhausted.

Position Summary

This position is funded by a grant for a duration of time as defined by the grant. 

As a member of an interdisciplinary COVID-19 Pandemic Response team, works under the general supervision of a team leader or manager.


Pay Grade: 47

Minimum Qualifications

100% -

1. Two (2) years of experience in a public health, investigation, nursing or related field; and

2. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in social sciences, public health, public administration, health administration, nursing, or related field; OR

3. An equivalent combination of related education and/or experience.


Duties and Responsibilities

1. Monitors compliance to COVID-19 protocols within businesses, establishments and venues by conducting inspections at various establishments frequented by the public.

2. Performs inspectional, instructional and promotional duties relative to compliance of the Shelby County COVID-19 Compliant Protocols/Standards.

3. Enforces local and State laws regarding environmental sanitation inspections in permitted establishments.

4. Informs operators of violations of local and state codes and informs them of enforcement schedules for compliance.

5. Educates and empowers the community by participating in training sessions to enlighten the community on regulations that may affect their access to public facilities.

6. Participates in planning and quality improvement initiatives and activities.

7. Responds to Health Department Operations Center (HDOC) as needed.

8. Performs other related duties as required or directed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

KSAs -

1. Ability to understand and apply concepts of COVID-19 infection control practices to businesses, establishments and venues.

2. Ability to explain to operators the violations noted and the laws that apply, and enforcement actions necessary.

3. Ability to write legibly and communicate effectively in written and verbal form to diverse clients in the field.

4. Ability to exercise professional judgement.

Special Requirements

1. Must possess a valid Tennessee driver license or secure one by date of employment.

2. Must have daily access to an operable automobile and meet county requirements for automobile insurance upon date of employment.

3. Must be available to be on-call.
